TWA Attends General Assembly of Human Rights Council in Geneva

Representatives of three Tibetan NGOs based in Dharamsala - Tibetan Women's Association, Gu-Chu-Sum, and Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy, attended the 4th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council held in Geneva, Switzerland from March 19th to April 5th. While all three NGOs raised their voices against the deplorable human rights conditions in Tibet, TWA focused mainly on the lack of rights for women in Tibet. TWA's critical areas of concern were Education, Employment, Health, Reproductive Rights and Women in Prison.

In August 2006, the Committee on Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) strongly recommended that China provide comprehensive information, including sex-disaggregated data, on the situation of rural women, including ethnic minority women, especially with regard to their educational, employment and health status as well as to exposure to violence. TWA's representative, Tsering Deckyi, requested the UN Human Rights Council to urge China to implement the recommendations made by CEDAW and to stop the grave situation of discrimination against Tibetan women in Tibet based on their race and gender.
